[ He did another one, but while Sharon was doing hers, and he's going to lift the cup to his face and drink to ruin it before having to show her up. ]

Or would, if this were the sort of thing where there was defeat.
[ She takes a sip of the latte, watching him over the rim of his cup. He has, once again, surprised her, because in this moment, when they're both momentarily quiet, it's comfortable. For her, at least. She hadn't thought she'd be able to genuinely tease him, or hear him laugh, or merely be. That she can do any of these - let alone all of them - is worrisome, though it only shows in her face for a moment. With her smiley face ruined when she'd taken a sip, she concentrates on doing something new. It can't be a portrait of Steve. There was no way she'd be able to pull it off.
After a moment, she tries her luck with a horse. It actually comes out looking somewhat horse-like. ]

--Oh, I almost forgot. They make great cake here, if you wanted any.
[ He smiles and pulls out their dessert menu, which was there the whole time but he'd been too busy with the lattes to bother. ]

But then, Sharon has a burger addiction and has always managed. That, and she's never really cared. She can work out more if she has to. ]
Want to split something?

I'm going to guess you've already seen the exhibition at the Met.

[ He laughs ]

Tony. I can have a word with him if you want. It's not like I don't have ways to prevent people from doing certain things.

[ He hands a latte to Sharon. It's Starry Night. ]
I couldn't exactly get the colors, but I hope it sorta looks alright.

[ She lifts her eyes to him and gapes. ]
You can do that with paint, too, can't you.
[ It isn't entirely a question. She sees your talent, Rogers. ]

If not for the War, do you think you would have been an artist? Or if SHIELD were disbanded? If you could be normal, I mean.

[ She glances at him, then focuses on the latte again. This might be personal for him, talking about his time before and possibly not being able to do something he wants. Or being able to, which might be more frightening, somehow. Either way, as much as she wants information, and she almost always wants information, she just wants to give him a moment to decide on his own, without her scrutiny and attention. He deserves that much, at least. ]

[ He smiles ]
I'm perfectly happy to be doing what we're doing instead. I'd still love to do it as a hobby, but... I don't know if I want to go to school again. It's a big commitment, art school. Eight-hour days.
I'll consider it when I retire.
[ Yeah.... retire.... like when he's dead. ]
no subject
[ Right. Because if there's something SHIELD agents are known for, it's retirement. Ha. More like, "They'll work 'til they're dead." ]
[ But that doesn't sound like the sort of thing to talk about on a date. They've both lost people that they'll never forget. No need to cast a pall over the date when there are so many palls elsewhere. ]
And you might be too advanced for night classes at the armory, if your latte skills are any indication, but there are usually night classes at some places. The museums do stuff, too. They even let you go in and paint copies of the paintings.

[ He has little stars in his eyes anyway, from thinking about just getting his hands dirty from paint again. ]
What about you? What did you want to do before this?
no subject
Nothing. All I ever wanted was to be a spy. Peggy used to tell me stories, you know. Of the things you guys used to do. Of the things she used to do. Stories about the French Resistance, about spies and soldiers. And that's what I wanted to be. That's what I always wanted to be. So my parents and Peggy helped me look into it, and I got into the right schools, and I took self-defense classes and gymnastics and Peggy would play spy games with me. Like, this one time when I was six, I went to her house, but she'd hidden the cookie jar. My mission was to find it, get the cookies, and put it back without getting caught. [ She smiles at the memory. And her dad had wondered why she'd liked hanging out at Peggy's house so much. ]
The missions got harder as I got older, and by the time I turned eighteen, I was ready.
I guess that's pretty boring, though. No, I don't know, bolt of lightning out of the blue or anything.
no subject
[ He smiles at her, beaming almost. ]
You went for what you wanted and didn't change your mind. I... like that about you.
no subject
[ She searches his eyes for a moment, then grins. Of course he isn't like so many of the SHIELD guys who think it's embarrassing they can't beat her in a fight. It's just... weird having coffee with - dating - someone who respects her decision to become an agent. ]
Surprising and nice. Um. Thanks.
[ But now that they're getting into nice things, she feels the need to turn the subject. She isn't accustomed to compliments outside of her performance in the field. ]
They're opening a new nightclub downtown soon. It's supposed to be a jazz club based on the 1940s. [ Such things had come into fashion after Steve came back. And so much of them are probably the exact opposite of what he's used to, poor guy. ]

Would you go with me?
I... never got to go dancing.
